As outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel meets with President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday, concern is growing over Berlin’s shift away from a “Western-facing” geopolitical alliance and more toward one that is making overtures toward Western rivals Russia and China, according to former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.
