According to Phillip Eng, president of MTA Long Island Rail Road, a vehicle stuck by two Long Island Rail Road trains passing in opposite directions caused death of 3 victims in addition to 9 injuries.
Phillip Eng. said the vehicle drove around railroad while trying to cross gates in Westbury, New York.
The 9 injuries include conductor, engineer & 7 train passengers were transported to area hospitals.
“This is a very tragic cautionary tale that you just don’t try to beat the train. It’s not, it’s not going to work”, Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive stated.
An eastbound train carrying 100 left Westbury station was responsible for first strike.
A westbound train carrying 800 people traveled at a higher speed struck the vehicle.
“We’re gonna work through the night and we’re gonna work to restore service as soon as possible”, Phillip stated.
Service is suspended on the Ronkonkoma and Huntington/Port Jefferson Branches in both directions. The 6:36PM train from Ronkonkoma due Penn at 7:56PM is disabled near the School Street crossing in Westbury after striking a truck that was on the tracks.
