The US air force has sent F-22 fighters to many bases in Qatar amid continuing tension with Iran.
A week after Tehran dropped a drone over the Strait of Hormuz that it said had penetrated its airspace.
The Air Force did not mention the total number of F-22 planes deployed.
But, a news photo showed at least five warplanes above the base.
These aircraft were deployed in Qatar for the first time in order to :
- defend US forces
- interests in the area of responsibility of the US Central Command.
The US air f
orce said in a statement:
“These aircraft sent to Qatar for the first time in order to protect US forces and interests in the area of operations of the US Central Command.”
The F-22 comes a week after an Iranian surface-to-air missile landed on a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
The downing of a US drone was just the latest in a series of provocations between the United States and Iran.
