Emirates Space Agency (ESA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Space Ship Company & Virgin Galacticto establish bilateral cooperation frameworks for scientific, space, educational & technological space exploration.
Committee reviewed latest developments in future & current UAE‘s projects in addition to discussing importance of issuing a plan to explore future of space sector that will help in studying future opportunities provided by sector besides enhancing future flexibility & readiness of space policies and other plans.
Memorandum of Understanding was signed with (Virgin Galactic) and (The Space Ship Company) at an official ceremony on sidelines of conference, in presence of HE Dr. Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Falous, Minister of State for Higher Education & Advanced Skills, Chairman of Emirates Space Agency, Engineer Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director General of the Agency, George White-sides, CEO of Virgin Galactic, representatives of Space Ship Company, as well as a number of officials and directors of departments and engineers at Emirates Space Agency.
His Excellency Dr. Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Falous stressed importance of projects supervised by Emirates Space Agency, which will be implemented over coming years.
Direct to space projects of the state, pointing to doubling of the number of students interested in study of space-related areas such as science, technology, engineering & mathematics.
Importance of effective communication with national universities to
- ensure that outputs of education are aligned with requirements of space sector.
- finding solutions to the challenges facing country and Middle East & North Africa region in general, especially in terms of food security, water resources, climate challenges & other fields.
“This important agreement is based on our long-term relationship with Virgin Galactic which reflects the significant development of UAE’s space industry, that will significantly enhance sector’s capabilities. And contribute to manufacture of spacecraft & start implementation of launch of spacecraft during next few years”, said Eng. Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director General of Emirates Space Agency.
“We appreciate the commitment of UAE to our program & looking forward to working with Emirates Space Agency besides relevant partners in UAE to achieve significant developments in field of microgravity,” said George Whitsaides, chief executive officer of Virgin Galactic & The Space Company.
Under memo, signatories plan to build a SpaceShip2, an aircraft carrier to operate from UAE in additional to operational plans for spacecraft at Al Ain airport in UAE.
Dr. Mohamed Al Ahbabi briefed members of Advisory Committee on achievements of the Agency during past year, as well as latest developments of space projects at the national level.
Members of Advisory Committee addressed challenges of space education sector & suggested ideas to attract attention of next generation besides training human resources within sector.
Advisory Committee discussed latest updates to national space policy document in UAE by presenting their ideas on how to attract investors from UAE & the world to space sector besides contributing to its growth, stressing importance of space laws & investments.
