According to former Republic of Ireland star Clinton Morrison, Chelsea will retain the Premier League title this season if they sign a “excellent” goalkeeper before the transfer window closes. So far this summer, Chelsea has made six deals, spending over £200million on the process. Following last season’s unsuccessful campaign for Kepa Arrizabalaga they are in the hunt for a goalkeeper.
A number of goalkeepers have been linked to a move to Stamford Bridge, but Rennes No. 1 Edouard Mendy seems to be playing for Lampard plumps.
If the 28-year-old will automatically succeed Arrizabalaga or challenge for Spain international remains to be seen.
But Morrison says improving in that area as early as this season will make Chelsea legitimate championship challengers.
“You look at Liverpool, Alisson-incredible. Ederson-excellent when Man City won it. But the backline needs to be very solid.
Chelsea has it all
In the meantime, Liverpool star Jamie Carragher says that Chelsea is unlikely to win the league with Arrizabalaga, and has reservations about Thiago Silva, a 35-year-old hire.
In what was a hugely busy summer at the club, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr all signed.
And at considerable expense too, with all the penalties ranging about £200million, which they can pay despite their trade ban.
And audiences are now enthusiastically awaiting, predictably, some of the fresh-faced talent’s debuts ahead of the south coast trip.
Without a new trio for the clash, Lampard will be Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell.
Silva, who joined from PSG on a free transfer, has been in quarantine since coming to London. Also he was only due to practice for the first time this weekend with Chelsea.
Chilwell is still suffering from a heel problem while Ziyech will miss the season’s start after suffering a knee injury that he sustained in Brighton’s pre-season friendly.
Christian Pulisic returned to training on Wednesday after he sustained a hamstring injury in the FA Cup final and he will be completely ready for the game.
Mateo Kovacic got a suspension after he got a red card vs Arsenal in last month’s Wembley loss.
