Thailand’s Phi Phi Islands closed for restoration

Phi Phi islands are one of the most popular beach destinations of Thailand

And like many other tourist hotspots before them, Phi Phi’s beautiful beauty has lead to unmanageable arrival levels.

Phi Phi has two main islands- the first one is  Phi Phi Leh is where you will find Maya Bay, however, there are no accommodations here as the overnight stay is prohibited and the second is Phi Phi Don.

Phi Phi Don is much larger and is known as the backpacker paradise due to the budget and mid-range accommodation options in Loh Dalum.

Both are part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi National Park, and according to the stats of the government it has attracted over 2 million visitors in 2017. Maya Bay attracted and an estimate of 3,700 visitors a day on average.

This year, a surprising step was taken by the government of closing the bay to tourists for four months, in order to make the place better, a project has been taken up which includes coral restoration work and the installation of a new jetty.
