Algérie, démission du président Abdelaziz Bouteflika

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his resignation as president after he resisted protests against him for weeks ending an era of 20 years in power.
Bouteflika, 82, a hero of “war of liberation”, has not appeared on public occasions, but rarely since he suffered a stroke in 2013.
The Algerian president tried to stem wave of opposition, which began in February, by reversing his decision to seek a fifth term, but did not set a date for abandonment of power, which angered protesters.
Bouteflika submitted his resignation after army chief of staff demanded immediate implementation of constitutional measures to remove him from office.

“I have the honor to officially inform you that I have decided to terminate my term of office as President of the Republic, effective today, Tuesday, 26 Rajab 1440H, corresponding to 2 April 2019. I have taken this decision, in order to avoid and prevent verbal wrangling, which, regrettably, undermines the status quo, and avoids turning into dangerous slide-ins to ensure the protection of persons and property, which remains one of the core competencies of the State. I wish good, all the best, to the Algerian people”
