Unmarried people can have sex without breaking law in Utah state from this Wednesday.
Gov. Gary Herbert signed a law allowing sex outside marriage “fornication”.
Before this Wednesday, fornication was a class B misdemeanor carried a possible penalty of up to six months in slammer under a 1973 law or a maximum fine of $1,000.
Herbert signed a bill previously which that misdemeanor offenses of sodomy & adultery among adults.
“what is legally is often far below what is morally right. I recognize our laws are not strong enough to rule an immoral people”
Crimes were unenforceable as a result of court rulings on what adults do in private known as “offenses against the family” in Beehive State.
Karen Mayne, leader of State Senate Minority said;
“You hear all over the US how you have antiquated laws about horses in the streets and all kinds of things, so we wanted to make them modern-day, in the now”
A student at Utah University called Emily Anderson wasn’t shocked by new freedom;
“Basically just like, ‘Oh thank God, I can do this thing I’ve always been doing”
@hemantmehta There’s a long gap between being illegal and not being legal. There has been no way Utah could enforce that for decades. It would have been quickly overturned by a federal Court. It’s clearly an unconstitutional violation of freedom of association to start and I’m sure much more.
