Actor Daniel “Danny” Trejo, who has gone from being the go – to-bad guy in countless movies to being the star and hero of his own hit action film franchise, will be the official celebrity starter for next month’s First Ever 17th Annual World Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Trejo, 75, a Los Angeles native, told The Sentinel-Record that he had never been to Arkansas before, let alone Hot Springs, but “I can’t wait to go. I’m very honored for the opportunity. I will have a lot of fun while I’m there.” We will join Trejo in his parade duties by his frequent co-star and close friend, actor Richard “Cheech” Marin, of “Cheech and Chong” fame, who will be the celebrities of gray.
“I love Him,” said Trejo, “I’ve known him for years. Hollywood can be a tough place, but he and I stayed with friends for years. He’s a wonderful man.” Trejo and Marin have starred in several movies directed by Robert Rodriguez, beginning with “Desperado” in 1996, and his sequel, “Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” both starring Antonio Banderas, the horror film “From Dusk till Dawn,” both featuring George Clooney,
It was his appearance as Isador “Machete” Cortez, a federal agent, in the movies “Spy Kids” and in a “fake trailer” for a “Machete” movie that appeared in the double feature “Grindhouse” directed by Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino, which led to his acting in a true “Machete” movie and a sequel, “Machete Kills.” “Robert and I thought about it while working on” Desperado.
“After the trailer came out, everyone started screaming they wanted to see that movie and then we just did it. The funny thing is that all that was in the trailer was really in the movie.” When they asked him which of his movies was his favorite, Trejo said “Machete” would always hold a special place.
“Even if I wasn’t in it, I would love ’Machete’,” he said. “It was just a wonderful, funny film. Even my mom liked it and she hates violence, but it’s so funny over the top.”
